Support for viewing MIP protected PDF files protected in other business tenants [Public Preview]
Microsoft has introduced additional support for MIP protected PDF’s in Microsoft Edge. This is currently in preview.
What is the feature?
If your organization has Microsoft Information Protection enabled, Microsoft Edge could open MIP protected PDF files which were protected in the same tenant seamlessly; across Windows and Mac. The support is now extended to PDF files which are protected in other business tenants as well.
Now, users would be able to open PDF files protected across different business tenants, and view the permissions that they have on them.
How to test?
The feature has been enabled by default in Microsoft Edge Canary to ease testing.
Once Microsoft Edge Canary is downloaded and installed, protected PDF files can be opened in it directly, without the need of any Add-ins.
Note: Microsoft Edge Canary is for testing only, and not for Production/scale deployment.
Local PDF files (files saved on users’ machines) can be opened by double clicking/any other preferred method
Files in SharePoint can be opened by clicking on “Open in Browser”
What to test?
- Were the PDF files protected in other business tenants opened seamlessly by the users who had permissions to open them
- Were the PDF files protected in other same/business tenants prevented from opening for the users who did not have permissions to open them
- Was the user able to view the right permissions they have on the file by clicking on “View Permissions”
- Were the users able to take any non-permitted actions?
Limitations:
- Applying protection to PDF’s from within Edge is not supported currently
- Protected PDF files cannot be viewed by Microsoft Account (MSA) users (non-business tenant users)
- Annotating/edition protected PDF files is not supported.
